2016-2017 Year in Review

Texas ATO started out 2016 with the largest fall pledge class in recent history, with 37 new brothers initiated into our fraternity. The fall pledge class bonded over projects such as setting up tailgates and building for our annual Christmas party, "Lake Tauhoe." Texas ATO kicked off the spring semester by hosting rapper Kirko Bangz to our house for our annual "Dirty South" party, where he performed his many hits to a packed house. Texas ATO boasted its largest spring pledge class in history, with 13 new brothers initiated into our fraternity at the end of the spring semester. Texas ATO had the largest and wildest Roundup event on campus, with the chapter putting on a two-day festival at the ATO house featuring Machine Gun Kelly, Foe G4ng, Shwayze, and Wes Walker. Additionally, Texas ATO put on an impromptu SXSW show in our living room featuring live performances by ROZES and Luca Lush.

In addition to this impressive social schedule, Texas ATO served our community by requiring all members to complete 15 hours of community service per semester. Texas ATO partnered with local organizations such as Neighborhood Longhorns and Keep Austin Beautiful to supply much-needed volunteers and organize philanthropic events. With a new executive board starting their term for the next calendar year, we are excited to see what's in store for our chapter in the coming year.

Year In Review

Following a strong fall semester, Texas Gamma Eta is poised to have another outstanding year in 2015. The chapter currently stands at 124 strong after initiating 33 new members, and is in the hunt to win the prestigious True Merit award at Alpha Tau Omega’s 150th anniversary celebration this summer. Because of successes with internal controls and recruitment, we are able to add an 80’s hair metal party to our spring social calendar. I couldn’t be prouder of Gamma Eta, or more honored to serve as its President for the year. Here are the highlights from last semester:

SCHOLARSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Brothers Carter Edwards (’11), Charles Inglis (’12), and Alex Garcia (’13) received $500 awards through the chapter’s merit-based scholarship program in recognition of their academic performance. Austin Paalz (’13), scholarship chairman, implemented Gamma Eta’s first resume workshop and networking event. In his words, the event “served to connect alumni with current Taus, build an understanding of the job search process, and give an opportunity to network with multiple accomplished professionals in a variety of fields.”

PHILANTHROPY

Philanthropy chairmen Alex Garcia and Michael Bosse (’12) organized Texas Shootout, a benefit concert featuring The Damn Quails. We raised $2800 to support Austin Pets Alive.

NEW MEMBER EDUCATION

We required pledges to join one additional student organization in order to enrich the new member program and bolster ATΩ’s presence on campus. This initiative improved our retention rate, and our pledges felt that getting involved helped them to adjust to the undergraduate experience.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Robbie Wolf (’12) completed his Newman semester in the fall and is now representing Gamma Eta in Texas Cowboys, while Michael Bosse is now supporting Bevo as a Texas Silver Spur. Andy Webber (’12) concluded his Executive Vice President term as second-in-command with the Texas Interfraternity Council and will be studying abroad in Israel this spring. German Martinez (’13) was elected Vice President of Texas Wakeboarding, and with his 3rd place individual performance led UT to an overall win at the Questoberfest Championship. Eric Melvin (’11), Carl Pecka (’11).

ALUMNI AND PARENTS

We sincerely appreciate the strong turnout at our November alumni banquet. 40 Gamma Eta alums enjoyed craft beer and Freedmen’s barbecue alongside actives, and a brave few joined us downtown afterwards. I’d like to give special thanks to the parents of Evan Trevino (’13) for preparing a delicious pig roast at the parents’ weekend tailgate. All in attendance were blown away. More to come on dates for Dads’ Day, the alumni golf tournament, and the baseball tailgate following our executive committee retreat.

As we prepare for the forthcoming semester, we are inspired by past successes and grateful for the opportunity to carry on the rich tradition of Texas Gamma Eta. Our chapter owes its current estimable standing to the support we receive from our parents and alumni. If you ever find yourself in the area, please stop by the house and spend a moment with our active brothers.

Alumni Baseball Tailgate a Success

Thanks to all the Alumni who came out to the tailgate for the Longhorn baseball game against OU last weekend. The good barbecue and company made for a quality time as the Longhorns put a beating on OU as we got the W with a 4-1 victory. We hope to see everyone who came out again at our upcoming golf tournament in May.

Dad's Weekend 2015

Thanks to all the Dad's who made it out to the events this weekend. We appreciate everything you all do to make our college experience possible. The combination of Top Golf and the poker tournament made for some quality time, we hope to see you all next semester for the Fall Parent's Weekend.
